Modeling Real-Time Balancing Power Market Prices

Abstract—This paper describes modeling of real-time balancing
power market prices by using combined seasonal auto regressive
integrated moving average (SARIMA) and discrete Markov
processes. The combination of such processes allows generation
of price series with periods where no demand for balancing
power exists. The purpose of the model is simulation of prices to
construct scenario trees representing possible realization of the
stochastic prices. Such scenario trees can be used in planning
models based on stochastic optimization to generate bid sequences
to the balancing market. The spread of the prices in the tree
and the shape of the scenarios are of central importance. Model
parameter estimation methods reflecting the demands on scenario
trees have therefore been used. The proposed model is also applied
to data from the Nordic power market. The conclusion of this
paper is that the developed model is appropriate for modeling
real-time balancing power prices.

The effect of flexible hydropower management on prices is a topic widely studied in research and eco-nomic analysis. However, the influence of transmission constraints and zonal prices on optimal hydrodispatching has not been highly considered in the literature. In the present study, an iterative algorithmfor calculating the optimal bids of hydro plants in a basin is proposed, considering the fundamentalinfluence of these plants in regions when transmission lines are congested and can affect zonal prices.The results show the efficiency of the algorithm and modifications in positioning of hydro plants in themarket.

Coordination of Generation Maintenance Scheduling in Electricity Markets

Abstract—Generation maintenance scheduling (GMS) plays an important role in power system operations. The restructuring of
the power industry has forced changes to the traditional maintenance
mechanism. On one hand, the generation companies seek to
maximize their profit. On the other hand, the independent system
operator (ISO) strives to maintain the operational reliability of the
system while maximizing the social welfare. This paper proposes
a coordination mechanism for generation maintenance scheduling
in electricity markets. In order to solve the resulting large mixed
integer programming (MIP) problem, a relaxation induced algorithm
is utilized. This technique is based on the solution of the
linear relaxed problem. The features of the coordination mechanism
and the performance of the algorithm are demonstrated
using the IEEE-118 bus system and a provincial power system in
China. Case studies show that the proposed mechanism not only
ensures the maintenance preference of the generating companies,
but also maintains the operational reliability of the system. They
also demonstrate that the algorithm is quite efficient at solving the
optimization problem.

Abstract—In this paper the operation of distributed charging
infrastructure of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is
characterized. Charging and discharging pattern is optimized
according to price variations to maximize the social benefit of
PEV participation as energy storage in the electricity market.
2009 US National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data set has
been used in several ways to probabilistically quantify the PEVs’
status in order to characterize the real time mobility behavior.
Grid regulation ancillary service potential of the vehicle fleet is
calculated based on the results of optimization problem.

Demand response for home energy management system

The optimization of energy consumption, with consequent cost reduction, is one of the main challenges for the present and future smart grid. Demand response (DR) program is expected to be vital in home energy management system (HEMS) which aims to schedule the operation of appliances to save energy costs by considering customer convenience as well as characteristics of electric appliances. The DR program is a challenging optimization problem especially when the formulations are non-convex or NP-hard
problems. In order to solve this challenging optimization problem efficiently, an effective heuristic approach is proposed to achieve a near optimal solution with low computational costs. Different from previously proposed methods in literatures which are not suitable to be run in embedded devices such
as a smart meter. The proposed algorithm can be implemented in an embedded device which has severe limitations on memory size and computational power, and can get an optimal value in real-time.
Numerical studies were carried out with the data simulating practical scenarios are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
