Frequency Dynamics Constrained Unit Commitment With Battery Energy Storage

:چکیده

Abstract—The decline of system inertia due to the increasing displacement of synchronous units by renewable units has introduced a major challenge on the frequency dynamics management of a power system. This paper discusses how fast-response battery energy storages can be used to maintain the frequency dynamic security. Immediately following a generation loss, the injections of batteries are adjusted instantly to ensure minimum power imbalance in the system. This control strategy is included in a novel formulation of the frequency dynamics constrained unit commitment, in which the impact of wind uncertainty is dealt with using interval-based optimization. The reformulation-linearization technique is applied to reformulate the original nonlinear model as a mixed-integer linear programming problem. Case studies on a six-bus system and the modified RTS-79 system demonstrate that the proposed method guarantees frequency security while still preserving economy without curtailing wind generation.

کاهش اینرسی سیستم به دلیل افزایش جابجایی واحدهای سنکرون توسط واحدهای تجدیدپذیر موجب چالش عمده‌ای برای مدیریت دینامیک فرکانس سیستم قدرت شده است. این مقاله نحوۀ بکارگیری ذخیره‌سازهای انرژی باطری با پاسخ سریع جهت حفظ امنیت دینامیک فرکانس را بحث می‌کند. فوراً پس از قطع تولید، تزریق باطری‌ها خیلی سریع تنظیم می‌شود تا حداقل میزان نامتعادلی توان در سیستم جبران شود. این راهبرد کنترلی در یک فرمول جدید در بهره برداری واحد مقید به دینامیک فرکانس گنجانده می‌شود، که در آن با استفاده از بهینه‌سازی مبتنی بر فاصلۀ زمانی بر تاثیر عدم قطعیت باد غلبه می‌شود روش خطی‌سازی فرمول‌بندی مجدد به منظور فرمول‌بندی مجدد مدل غیرخطی اصلی به صورت یک مسالۀ برنامه‌نویسی خطی عدد صحیح ترکیبی اعمال می‌شود. مطالعات موردی انجام گرفته روی یک سیستم شش باسه و سیستم اصلاح‌شدۀ RTS-79 نشان می‌دهد که این روش پیشنهادی تضمین‌کنندۀ امنیت فرکانس بوده و در عین حال بدون کاهش میزان تولید توان بادی باعث صرفه‌جویی اقتصادی هم می‌شود.

This article presents the significance of efficient hybrid heuristic search algorithm(HS-PABC) based onHarmony search algorithm (HSA) and particle artificial bee colony algorithm (PABC) in the context ofdistribution network reconfiguration along with optimal allocation of distributed generators and shuntcapacitors. The premature and slow convergence over multi model fitness landscape is the main limitationin standard HSA. In the proposed hybrid algorithm the harmony memory vector of HSA are intelligentlyenhanced through PABC algorithm during the optimization process to reach the optimal solution withinthe search space. In hybrid approach, the exploration ability of HSA and the exploitation ability of PABCalgorithm are integrated to blend the potency of both algorithms. The box plot and Wilcoxon rank sumtest are used to show the quality of the solution obtained by hybrid HS-PABC with respect to HSA.Thecomputational results prove the integrated approach of the network reconfiguration problem along withoptimal placement and sizing of DG units and shunt capacitors as an efficient approach towards theobjective. The results obtained on 69 and 118 node network by proposed method and the standard HSAreveals the powerfulness of the proposed approach which guarantees to achieve global optimal solutionwith less iteration.

Optimal Resources Planning of Residential Building Energy System

Abstract— This paper deals with optimal resources planning
in a smart residential building energy system, including FC (fuel
cell), PV (Photovoltaic) panels and the battery. A day-ahead
energy management system (EMS) based on invasive weed
optimization (IWO) algorithm is defined for managing different
resources to determine an optimal operation schedule for the
energy resources at each time interval to minimize the operation
cost of a smart residential building energy system. Moreover, in
this paper the impacts of the sell to grid and purchase from grid
are also considered. All practical constraints of the each energy
resources and utility policies are taken into account. Moreover,
sensitivity analyses are conducted on electricity prices and sell to
grid factor (SGF) values, in order to improve understanding the
impact of key parameters on residential CHP systems economy.
It is shown that proposed system can meet all electrical and
thermal demands with economic point of view. Also enhancement
of electricity price leads to substantial growth in utilization of
proposed CHP system.

Solution of optimal power flow with FACTS devices using a novel
oppositional krill herd algorithm

:چکیده

Krill herd algorithm (KHA) is a novel meta-heuristic approach that is influenced from the herding behaviour
of the krill swarms searching for food or communication with each other. The proposed opposition
based KHA (OKHA) is intended here, for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of power system,
incorporating flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices, namely, thyristor controlled series
capacitor and thyristor controlled phase shifter. In the proposed OKHA, the concept of opposition based
population initialization and opposition based generation jumping are employed in the basic KHA to
enhance its computational speed and convergence profile. The potential of the proposed OKHA is
assessed, successfully, on modified IEEE-30 bus and IEEE-57 bus test power systems. The four different
objective functions are formulated here that reflects the minimization of fuel cost, active power
transmission loss, emission and combined economic and environmental cost, separately. Simulation
results, presented in this paper, indicate that the proposed approach yields superior solution over the
other popular methods surfaced in the recent state-of-the-art literature including basic KHA and also
show its effectiveness for the solution of OPF problem of power system equipped with FACTS devices.

A novel control system design to improve LVRT capability of fixed 
speed wind turbines using STATCOM in presence of voltage fault

The design and implementation of a new control system for reactive power compensation and mechanical
torque, voltage regulation and transient stability enhancement for wind turbines equipped with
fixed-speed induction generators (IGs) in power systems is presented in this study. The designed optimal
linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller provides an acceptable post fault performance for both small
and large perturbations. Large disturbance simulations demonstrate that the designed controller
enhances voltage stability as well as transient stability of the system during low-voltage ride-through
transients and thus enhances the LVRT capability of fixed-speed wind generators. Further verifications
based on detailed time-domain simulations are also provided. Calculations, simulations and measurements
confirm how the increased STATCOM rating can provide an increased transient stability margin
and consequently enhanced LVRT capability. A concept of critical clearing time has been introduced
and its utility has been highlighted.

Reliability forecasting models for electrical distribution systems
considering component failures and planned outages

Many utilities in developing countries are investing in installation and renewing of Electrical Distribution
System (EDS) components, such as overhead lines, cables and switching devices, to improve the EDS
reliability and meet the rapid increase of load demand. In the beginning stage of investment, it is very
difficult to evaluate the EDS reliability by using traditional methods due to EDS topology not being fully
determined. This paper presents a comprehensive model for forecasting EDS reliability, which is built
separately into two parts, i.e. the models for EDS failures and planned outages. Firstly, a three-layer
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is proposed to forecast the EDS reliability considering EDS
failures. Each neuron in the ANN input layer represents a key influencing factor of EDS failures, which
are recognized by Gray Relational Analysis (GRA) method. The proposed ANN is trained using historical
reliability data of an EDS. In addition, a planned outage reliability model is also built according to the
magnitude of investment and type of planned outage. The priorities of improvement measures can also
be obtained using the GRA to improve the EDS reliability. Case studies of practical EDSs illustrate the
efficiency and applicability of the proposed techniques.

Optimal Design of Grid-Connected Voltage
Source Converters Considering Cost and
Operating Factors

Abstract—This paper assesses the feasibility of threephase
pulse-width modulated (PWM) three-level voltage
source converters (VSC), namely neutral-point-clamped (3LNPC)
and T-type (3L-T) as alternatives to two-level converter
(2L-VSC) for low-voltage multi-MW renewable energy gridconnected
converter applications. For this purpose, a novel
design algorithm that takes switching frequency, capacity
factor, modulation index, PWM scheme(s) and converter
topology(ies) as input is unveiled to provide the design steps
and performance benchmark for the specified topologies and
modulation methods. Design of the LCL-filter is also
addressed and equivalent output ripple performance criteria
is used to benchmark the converter performances for a set of
selected filter parameters. Main contribution of this algorithm
is that it covers cost and operating factors of the design
during the hardware design phase by introducing/modifying
the terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) and return on
investment time (ROI) considering the major energy markets.
The design is detailed for 1 MVA system, and the results are
summarized for 0.5 and 2 MVA systems. The study shows that
3L topologies perform more efficiently than 2L-VSC (T-type
being the most prominent—with the shortest ROI) whereas
the difference becomes much more prominent at the multi-
MW range, provided that all three yield equivalent outputs
fulfilling the stringent grid codes.
